Just days after The Victory Cup announced a hot air balloon festival scheduled for December in Fredericksburg, more than 30,000 people had expressed interest in attending — at least three times as many people as the festival has space for.

Set for Dec. 29, the festival will include an evening glow, tethered rides, and a limited amount of free tickets to the morning launch, in addition to polo tournament activities. Its host, the Victory Cup, is a national polo tournament that’s been around for 14 years.

The Victory Cup anticipates there will be about two dozen balloons at the event.

Tethered rides allow attendees to experience ballooning while remaining anchored to the ground and never leaving the site. Tickets for the rides, which cost $30 per person, must be purchased ahead of time.

The hot air balloon glow (when the balloons light up at night to create a glow effect) is included in festival attendance fees.

Gates open for the event at 6 a.m., and the morning launch is scheduled for 6:45 a.m., weather permitting.

In addition to balloon activities, the festival will also feature live music, a wine tasting tent, a battle of the chefs tasting competition, polo matches, a kid’s play area, pop-up art galleries, and more.

This is the second time The Victory Cup has hosted an event in Fredericksburg, a spokesperson said, and staff are very excited about the “viral” response they have received to the event this year.

It’s a family- and pet-friendly event and the property has the capacity to host large crowds, but The Victory Cup said they will cap attendance around 5,000 to 10,000 guests to prevent overcrowding.
